Fronius Builds First Green Hydrogen Customer Plant in Austria

Forward-Looking Mobility Solution With Emergency Power Supply

The Fronius Solhub will be Lower Austria’s first green hydrogen system at the SAN Group1 company site in Herzogenburg by mid-2022. It will be fed with solar power from the company’s own 1.5 MWp PV system (annual energy consumption of approx. 200 households).

By means of electrolysis processes, up to 100 kg of CO2-neutral, green hydrogen can be produced daily on-site in the future.

Not only will the locally produced hydrogen be used for the company’s internal fleet, but will also be available to external partners. The turnkey-ready system also includes a hydrogen-powered emergency power supply for the site that was crucial for a largely self-sufficient energy system.

The realisation of the first Fronius Solhub is a lighthouse project. Making the sun available 24 hours a day, generating, storing, distributing and consuming it intelligently and cost-efficiently is pointing the way forward. The goal is a future in which the world’s energy needs are covered by 100 per cent renewables.

Martin Hackl, Global Sales & Marketing Director (Solar Energy)

Our plant aims to be able to store and use solar energy for 24 hours. The fully integrated energy concept with waste heat utilisation and reverse power generation of the excess hydrogen will supply the entire SAN Group site in the future.

Customized Planning, Conception, and Implementation

In designing and implementing the turnkey hydrogen system solution, the SAN Group benefited above all from the many years of technical expertise of Fronius, which serves as the single point of contact for the entire project.

After a comprehensive needs assessment, the 700 bar system was planned according to the individual requirements of the group and is now being realized.

During the pre-project phase, the Fronius team assisted with applications for funding and dealing with the authorities, and handled all the planning and project management work.
After the planned completion in spring 2022, the system will be handed over with professional training and, once the maintenance and service contract2 has been signed, will be looked after by Fronius for the next few years.

We support companies in the energy transition. Companies like the SAN Group are taking on a pioneering role by clearly committing to the increased use of renewable energies and putting this commitment into practice. Improving the CO2 balance, regional value creation, sustainable mobility solutions, and autonomy through emergency power supply: the Fronius Solhub brings all these benefits with it.
